"Let’s go eat Cinnamon Bun."
Happy belated birthday, Pen, who celebrated earlier this week in the best way possible by slicing open poor Cinnamon Bun, thanks to our pals Lisa and Mary at Big Sugar Bakeshop in nearby Studio City. Who knew Cinnamon Bun’s guts were all rainbow colored?
Had no clue it was his bday! Happy birthday Pen Ward!
There it is everyone! My first published writing, check it out in Telephone weekly!
Growing up I didn’t have a “hero” or a “role model” when asked this question in grade school I normally just lied about it or just came up with something on the spot. But now as someone in my mid-20s I do have a couple of people I look to for guidance in my career life. To my cousin by marriage Mike Williamson I have to thank for giving me my love for comics. When I first was introduced he was at least in his mid-30s but that didn’t stop him from showing me his collection of DC vs Marvel. My girlfriend asked me who told me it was ok to be a nerd and it was probably him. Next comes the 3 people that have probably inspired me in my writing career. Joss Whedon, John Green, and Neil Gaiman (who I just recently discovered). These authors have shown me that in today’s world it’s not just novelists who write anymore. You can get respect from any kind of writing you just gotta get your voice out there. John Green has a successful vlog with his brother Hank (even the US present and an Olympic contender are Nerdfighters). Neil Gaiman has written comic books, American mythological fiction, Dr. Who episodes, and now a video game, not to mention a novel that’s in the works to become a 6 season long HBO series. Joss Whedon (someone who as a writer I aspire to be like) has created numerous tv series, many of which have lovable characters in them that die, a YouTube min-series that has man it to Netflix, written comic books for his series that end premature, and directed/written one of the top grossing films of all time. I once had a piece of work I was developing compared to something Whedon would write by one of my fellow Browncoats and it felt like one of the greatest complements I have ever received.
I am still working on said work, it’s been a slow progress what with working a day job that constantly requires me to stay late and working on getting my BA in creative writing. But I know that what I’m writing means a lot to me and to not put these characters on paper would be doing them and my fellow writers a disservice. So I’ll keep on with it and do my best.
